Now I know what you may be thinking. Many people
imagine life for women in Dubai as much more difficult and stressful than
it is. Some of the biggest misunderstandings between Middle Easterners and
people from other parts of the world occur over the issue of women, and
half-truths and stereotypes exist on both sides. But don’t you worry, while you
will be in Quadira’s body you will not be some kind of veiled repressed victim.
Reality is much more nuanced as with any society, and there are thousands of
middle and upper-middle-class professional women in the Arab Emirates who
juggle work and family responsibilities.
The issue of sex is where the differences between the
cultures are particularly apparent, and you should keep in mind to always dress
modestly, covering your head and shoulder with your hijab as well as the rest
of your body, and trying to not parade a set of values different from that of
the locals. A bit of common sense helps keep the peace, and moreover dressing
modestly will attract less attention to you and prove more comfortable with the
heat.
Other than that, as long as you’ll stay within the city
I’m sure you will love your stay. Dubai has one of the most amazing skylines in
the world, it is a foodies heaven, it has beautiful sun, sea, and sand, and it
is an incredible multi-cultural melting pot with an unparalleled display of
diversity. We’re sure you are going to enjoy your vacation, and who knows, this
may actually turn out to be a wonderful chance to discover a different culture
and come back from your trip enriched.
